The Castle Schools Cup

The Castle Schools Cup, which was founded in 2005, was set up to encourage school children from 8 to 12 years of age to play golf. It was developed and promoted by Haydon - Chartered Accountants in partnership with the Castle Golf Club and with assistance of Junior Golf Ireland .

The overall objective of this golf initiative is to give children the "kiss of golf" at an early age so that they learn the basic skills and develop the confidence to keep playing the game for many years into the future.

Each of the twenty four participating junior schools has initiated weekly coaching sessions. These coaching sessions are arranged by the teachers and parents and involve students going to Pitch and Putt courses, Driving Ranges and Golf Clubs.

So far this initiative has seen over 2,000 boys and girls from the Dublin area participate in the event. The finale of the golf season will involve school children from sixth class in each of these schools competing in the Castle Schools Cup hosted by the Castle Golf Club on the final Monday of May each year.

Competition is always strong but fair between the various schools to see who will be the Champions of the Castle Schools Cup for Boys and Girls.

On the day there will also be a "Skills Challenge" coaching session for fifth and sixth class school children organised by Junior Golf Ireland.

European Tour Golf Professionals Gary Murphy and Gary Evans of Green 17 – Golf Management also attend and provide a golf clinic on the day for the school kids to get the opportunity to see the talent and skills associated with tour professionals.

Setanta Sports have previously been in attendance on the day to screen the event across Ireland and Europe.
